TAIWAN FUN Taipei City Guide.June, 2009 EDITION:
For those of you old enough, there is a scene of a much younger Tom Cruise jumping about with sunglasses in his underwear embedded in your brain. With the possible exception of 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure', that Tom Cruise scene in 'Risky Business' did more than anything to elevate the art of air guitar. These iconic '80s flicks made what was previously an embarrassing, private activity cool. And, finally, Taiwan is going to host its first air guitar championship and send a representative to the world championships in Finland. This local guitar god will be representing Taiwan, rather than, say, 'Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu' (I love cheering for the 'fightin' customs territory!') or 'Chinese, Taipei'. We'll see how long that lasts.

TEach year that we promote this festival, we seem to be in the habit of noting that it will be "bigger and better". This has never been exaggeration or mere sales talk, as the event indeed has grown and improved each year we've organized it. This year, that is certainly again the case as we're transforming the festival into a two-day party for the first time and making a few other improvements. However, last year's outstanding location on the Art Museum Parkway will remain unchanged. Read this month's cover story for more exciting details. Most importantly, don't miss what some participants have told me is their "favorite day of the year" in Taichung, and be sure to bring your friends and family.

This month, we take once again take this approach by journeying to the well-known Nantou county town of Puli. Spring is an ideal time to visit this pretty, attraction-rich town and its surrounding countryside, and Taichung city residents can now do so in under an hour. On March 21, 37.6-kilometer-long National Freeway No. 6 officially opened, linking Wufong in Taichung county to Puli. Head south on Freeway No. 3, transfer to No. 6 and you're on your way. Besides Puli, this exciting new gateway also makes travel to Sun Moon Lake, Hohuan Mt. and other Nantou scenic destinations a relatively short jaunt
