This is the bees knees, the dog's thingys. This is arguably thee best Dr Who story ever produced. What you have is as it sounds, the genesis of the Daleks. If you love Dr Who this is a must have. Sara Jane's antics as a prisoner are little bit tiresome. But this is a definative Dr Who story, without this story the WHo universe simply would not be so good.

If you have never seen this, and enjoy Daleks, Dr Who..you MUST see this.

SO Newsom has abandon Pop, for this record at least. There are no verse chorus verse songs here. Well to be honest there never were, but the Milk eyed member her previous album, at least "appeared" to have a pop sensibility.

Having seen Newsom perform the album in its totality before actually hearing it, helped. I knew what to expect. What we get is an epic album. Perhaps best thought of as one piece of music. It really is impossible to think of this a s seperate songs. Like a long story you are arrested by the music and the words.

Yes it is self indulgent, and for those who have a short attention span, look elsehwere. This is a "difficult" album one many will hate. One many will also adore. This may catapult Ms Newsom to heady places, it may end her career. In the end you have to applaud her for having the courage to actually amke this album. Clearly her debut discs only hninted at this.

I urge anyone to see her live, live she is so much better than on CD.

I rember when I 1st heard mall monarchy...the video blazed on the screen on British terrestial (non cable or sattelite for americans)TV. That was it I was hooked ..I HAD to get this album. Luckily I got the album, I got the LTD edition 2cd version. Buy this album...this is just a great band. The viseral punk spews out. Live on 1994...

I grabbed a promo copy of the album from ebay several weeks before it came out...and grabbed another promo copy at the "record release party" at tonic.....So I was quite familiar when I saw Gira....

Of course as always several of the songs were available all be it in different form on several older releases. I do like the way Gira releases "demo" versions of songs long before they are recorded "proper" on album....it is interesting to hear the "evolution"......

The Album as a whole is great...its a very different animal to "everything is good here..."....Gira threatend to create a more mellow album...and I guess this is the result. The songs themselves are great. Opener is Lena's song....originally released on one of the LTD edition website exclusives....I forget the name this second...the brown one....lol.......I do like the finished version of this song a lot. It is a great song live too.......

I am personally partial to "Jackie's spine"...and of course the violent "Michael's white hands" which is a fave live.....The Final version of Destroyer is also great. Having heard it live 2 or 3 times before it was ever recorded thsi is also a fave song for me. The AKron boys do a great job on this song...on the final record...and live in the current incarnation of AOL.....


On the mountain...another old song is also good. I often think of AOL as folk music with the use of accoustic guitars as double headed axes.....I think this album more so than the previous AOL albums displays this violence perhaps in a subtle more beautiful way than ever before.

the 1st time I heard swans was the album re issue of "COP"...I was so scared I didnt listen to it again for months. Finally I got to love Cop...

This album got re released just as I had become a Swans fan. What can I say nothing prepared me. Consistency all the way through.....just fantastic music ...music that has been bled into its making quite clearly.

Gira sites this as his fave swans album....and I can see why...sadly although I have only seen gira posthumously 4/5 times...he never seems to play from this album.....

Stand out tracks definatly:kiling for company(a heart wrenching soul breaking song...which I have often listend to this album just for this song) mother's milk, she lives! (with such great lines as "I just want to thankyou for going insane...you burn like joan of arc purified by the flames)and I am the sun.....but there isnt really 1 bad track here...hence consistency.....though sometimes the live xtra track of I am the sun can grate....but otherwise PURRRfection....
